What Is the 2290 Schedule 1? Your Stamped Proof of Payment Explained

Schedule 1 is the page of Form 2290 that lists your vehicles by VIN. Once the IRS accepts your return, a stamped copy comes back to you — and that stamped copy is your proof of payment for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax. Without it, your state will not register or renew a heavy vehicle.

Details below reflect the Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2026).

What goes on Schedule 1?

Schedule 1 does two jobs: it reports every vehicle you’re paying tax on (including any increase in taxable gross weight) plus every vehicle you’re claiming suspension for, and it serves as proof of payment to register those vehicles in any state.

Part I is a count — total vehicles reported on line a, tax-suspended category W vehicles on line b, and taxable vehicles on line c (line a minus line b). Part II lists the VIN of each vehicle by category.

Your name, address, and EIN on Schedule 1 must match Form 2290 page 1 exactly, and you must enter the same month of first use you put on line 1.

How do I get the stamped copy?

You complete and file two copies of Schedule 1. The second is stamped and returned to you. A return may be rejected outright if Schedule 1 isn’t attached.

If you e-file, a Schedule 1 bearing an IRS watermark is sent electronically to your electronic return originator, transmitter, or intermediate service provider. Ask them for the original electronic copy — that watermarked file is what your DMV needs.

How long does it take?

The IRS states that once your return is accepted, a stamped Schedule 1 can be available within minutes when you e-file. Paper filing means waiting for mail in both directions.

Worth being precise about the language: minutes is what’s possible after acceptance. Acceptance is not automatic on submission — a return with a name/EIN mismatch, a duplicate filing, or a bad VIN gets rejected rather than accepted, and no Schedule 1 is issued until the problem is fixed. See e-filing and what to do when a 2290 is rejected.

Do I need it to register my truck?

Generally yes. States will require verification that the tax was paid before registering a taxable vehicle, and the stamped Schedule 1 is that verification. U.S. Customs and Border Protection also requires it to bring a Canadian or Mexican vehicle into the United States.

If you don’t have the stamped copy, the IRS allows a photocopy of the filed Form 2290 with Schedule 1 attached, together with a photocopy of both sides of the cancelled check, as proof of payment.

Three exceptions worth knowing

Registering in July, August, or September. If the state receives your registration application in those months, you may present the immediately previous tax period’s approved Schedule 1 as proof — while still filing the current period’s return by its due date.

Recently purchased vehicle. No proof of payment is required for a new or used vehicle if you show the state a copy of the bill of sale showing purchase within the last 60 days. You must still file the return and pay any tax due.

DMV forwarding programs. A limited number of states participate in an alternate proof-of-payment program: hand your Form 2290 with voucher and payment to the DMV, they forward it to the IRS, and no further proof is needed. The catch — your return isn’t considered filed until the IRS receives it, and you remain responsible for penalties or interest if the DMV files it late or loses it.

How do I get a copy of a prior-year Schedule 1?

Send a written request to the IRS at 7940 Kentucky Drive, Florence, KY 41042-2915.

If you e-filed, check with your provider first — most retain the watermarked Schedule 1 in your account, which is considerably faster than a mailed request.

What is the consent to disclosure?

Schedule 1 includes a consent section. The IRS shares the VINs reported and verification that you paid the tax on line 6 with the Department of Transportation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and state DMVs — but it needs your consent to release it. Signing and dating that consent is what lets your DMV verify payment electronically.

Frequently asked questions

Does the e-filed version count as stamped?
Yes. The electronic Schedule 1 carries an IRS watermark and serves as proof of payment.

Do suspended vehicles appear on Schedule 1?
Yes. Category W vehicles are listed in Part II and counted on line b of Part I, even though no tax is paid on them.

My VIN is wrong on the stamped copy.
File a VIN correction — check the VIN Correction box, list the corrected VIN on Schedule 1, use the Form 2290 for the period being corrected, and attach an explanation. See VIN corrections.

What if I only have part of the VIN?
Enter the full VIN. The IRS warns that failure to include it may prevent you from registering with the state. VINs are generally 17 characters — and use the vehicle’s, not the trailer’s.
