Montana’s trucking bureaucracy is split between two departments most states don’t pair: county treasurers under the Department of Justice register standard trucks, while the Department of Transportation runs IRP. The state is picky about proof — vendor “transaction summaries” are rejected by name — but famously helpful too: include a stamped envelope and Motor Carrier Services will mail your 2290 to the IRS for you.
Quick answer: Standard registration happens at your county treasurer, under the Motor Vehicle Division (Department of Justice) and its new CARS system. Apportioned (IRP) registration runs through MDT Motor Carrier Services in Helena, with online filing — and 2290 uploads — in ePART. Proof of HVUT is required for all power units at 55,000 pounds registered gross weight or more, alone or in combination, for the current July–June period.
Where do I register a heavy truck in Montana?
Intrastate: the county treasurer where you’re domiciled — all 56 counties moved onto the MVD’s new CARS registration system in March 2025. Interstate: MDT Motor Carrier Services at 2701 Prospect Avenue, Helena, which since 2025 can also title IRP vehicles directly. Carriers file IRP renewals online in ePART, where “2290’s, Bill of Sale, Signature Sheet” and powers of attorney upload via Web Processing. (A third system, eTRIPS, launched December 2025 for oversize/overweight and GVW-fee permits — and even there, a current 2290 must be on file before a permit at 55,000 pounds or higher will be finalized.)
What proof of HVUT payment does Montana accept?
- A stamped copy or e-filed copy of Schedule 1 — the MVD notes the e-filed confirmation “will include a watermark of the e-file logo”;
- A photocopy of Schedule 1 plus both sides of your cancelled check — on the IRP side, only with the IRS endorsements visible;
- Explicitly not accepted: “a transaction summary from a third-party transmitter” — the confirmation screen your e-file provider shows you is not proof. Only the IRS’s own stamped or watermarked Schedule 1 counts.
The form must be in the owner’s name and for the current July 1–June 30 period. Exempt and suspended vehicles still file — Montana repeats the federal rule that the low-mileage break (5,000 miles; 7,500 agricultural) “is a suspension of payment only.” Even tribal-owned vehicles registering through the county need the stamped or watermarked copy if they operate on any public roadway. See suspended vehicles.
The 60-day window — with worked examples and a hard stop
On the IRP side, Montana issues a temporary authority for up to 60 days when you add a vehicle, and holds your credentials until the receipted 2290 arrives. The deadline is the last day of the month following the month the vehicle joined the fleet, never exceeding 60 days — MDT’s own examples: added mid-January, you have until the end of February; added July 1, until August 29. Miss it and the consequence is concrete: your account is blocked from further work until the 2290 arrives. For renewals, the June 30–September 30 window accepts the previous year’s receipted copy. Montana will mail it for you
A documented courtesy few states offer: send Motor Carrier Services your completed Form 2290, a check made out to the IRS, and a stamped envelope addressed to the IRS, and MCS “will make the required verification and forward it on for you” to expedite payment. It’s a forwarding convenience, not a filing — the return isn’t filed until the IRS receives it — so e-filing, which returns the watermarked Schedule 1 in minutes, remains the surer path. See how to e-file. Montana also reports the other direction: when a vehicle registered under 55,000 pounds increases its weight, copies of the registration and weight increase are forwarded to the IRS for verification — so don’t skip the amended return.
What’s federal and doesn’t change in Montana
- Threshold of 55,000 pounds taxable gross weight — licensed alone or in combination
- Tax period July 1 through June 30, due August 31 for vehicles in service in July
- Otherwise due the last day of the month following first use
- $100 at 55,000 pounds, rising $22 per 1,000 pounds, to $550 maximum
- E-filing required at 25 or more taxable vehicles
- Suspension at 5,000 miles or less, 7,500 for agricultural vehicles
See what Form 2290 is and tax rates. One Montana budgeting note: a heavy truck’s annual bill stacks the flat registration fee, an age-based fee in lieu of property tax (up to $375 for a new truck), and gross-vehicle-weight fees ($400 at the 56,000-pound bracket up to $750 at 80,000) — and GVW is sold in 2,000-pound increments, so asking for 55,000 pounds bills at the 56,000 bracket. Montana’s famous permanent registration doesn’t apply here: heavy trucks renew annually, so the 2290 check recurs every year.
What to bring (or upload)
- Stamped or e-file-watermarked Schedule 1 for the current period, in the owner’s name — uploaded in ePART for IRP, included with county renewals
- Or a Schedule 1 photocopy plus both sides of the cancelled check with IRS endorsements
- Not a vendor transaction summary — it will be rejected
- Title documents and proof of insurance

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Montana Form 2290?
No. Form 2290 is a federal IRS return. Montana checks the resulting Schedule 1 at the county or at Motor Carrier Services — and can even mail your return to the IRS if you supply the envelope.
Why was my e-file confirmation rejected?
Montana explicitly refuses third-party transaction summaries. Print the actual IRS Schedule 1 with the e-file watermark from your provider — that’s the accepted document.
Can I put my heavy truck on permanent registration?
No — permanent registration covers older light vehicles and trailers. Heavy trucks renew annually, with the 2290 check each time.
I added a truck to my IRP fleet mid-month — how long do I have?
Until the last day of the following month, capped at 60 days, on a temporary authority. After that, credentials hold and the account is blocked until the 2290 arrives.
