Form 2290 Payment Options: Direct Debit, EFTPS, Card, and Check

There are four ways to pay Form 2290 tax: electronic funds withdrawal when e-filing, EFTPS, credit or debit card, and check or money order with a payment voucher. The tax must be paid in full with your Form 2290.

The methods differ in timing rules and what paperwork accompanies them. From the Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2026).

Electronic funds withdrawal (direct debit)

Available only if you’re filing electronically. You authorize a direct debit during the e-filing process, and payment moves with the return.

Don’t include a payment voucher when using this method. For most e-filers it’s the simplest option — one step, no separate enrollment, no second system to remember.

EFTPS

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is voluntary, but you must enroll before you can use it. Enrollment isn’t instant, so this is not a method you can pick on your deadline day if you’re not already set up. Enroll at EFTPS.gov or call 800-555-4477.

The timing rule matters: for an EFTPS payment to be on time, you must submit it by 8:00 p.m. Eastern time the day before the payment is due. A payment submitted on the due date itself may post late.

Check the EFTPS box on line 6, skip the voucher, and if filing on paper mail the return to the address for returns without payment due. EFTPS does not process payments from international financial institutions.

Credit or debit card

Pay through IRS.gov/PayByCard. The service providers charge a convenience fee — the IRS doesn’t set or receive it.

Check the credit or debit card box on line 6, don’t include the voucher, and if filing on paper use the no-payment-due mailing address.

At the $550 maximum per vehicle, a percentage-based convenience fee is modest for one truck and meaningful for a fleet. Worth comparing against the free options.

Check or money order

This method requires Form 2290-V, the payment voucher. The IRS is specific about the details:

  • Don’t send cash
  • Make it payable to “United States Treasury”
  • Write your name, address, EIN, “Form 2290,” and the date from box 3 of the voucher on your payment
  • Detach the voucher and send it with Form 2290, both copies of Schedule 1, and your payment
  • Don’t staple the payment to the voucher or the form

If you filed electronically, don’t send Form 2290 and Schedule 1 along with the voucher.

Filling out Form 2290-V

Four boxes. Box 1 is your EIN. Box 2 is the amount you’re paying. Box 3 is the same date you entered on Form 2290, Part I, line 1 — your month of first use. Box 4 is your name and address exactly as shown on Form 2290, printed clearly.

If a third party prepares your return, give them the voucher.

Where paper returns go

The mailing address depends on whether payment accompanies the return:

SituationMail to
With full payment, not from an international institutionInternal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 932500, Louisville, KY 40293-2500
No payment due, or paid by EFTPS or cardDepartment of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Ogden, UT 84201-0031
Check or money order from an international institutionInternal Revenue Service, International Accounts, 1973 Rulon White Blvd., Ogden, UT 84201-0038

Private delivery services designated by the IRS can satisfy the timely-mailing-as-timely-filing rule, but they cannot deliver to P.O. boxes — use the U.S. Postal Service for any P.O. box address, and the Ogden street address for a PDS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay in installments?
No. The tax must be paid in full with Form 2290.

Can I get more time to pay?
An extension of time to file doesn’t extend time to pay — that must be requested separately, before the due date.

Which method is fastest for a Schedule 1?
Direct debit with e-filing keeps everything in one transaction, and an accepted return can produce a stamped Schedule 1 within minutes.

I’m paying from a Canadian bank.
EFTPS won’t work. Use the international accounts address in Ogden for a check or money order drawn on an international institution.
